This paper aims to provide an overview of the existing research on community cooperatives and community foundations. It will also examine the potential of these organisations to drive social innovation at the local level through institutional change and adaptation to the specific needs of different territorial contexts. To this end, the paper will present an analysis of four Italian case studies. The research findings reveal a distinctive presence of community cooperatives in the internal regions of the Centre, while community foundations are predominantly located in the northern part of the country, with the involvement of local authorities. The link identified between the contextual endowments of the territory and the culture of the actors for the production of collective goods for development understood as “common good”, suggests that further research should be conducted through a comparison of the case studies by context. This would enable an evaluation of the impacts that these new organisational forms have on the ground in terms of institutional innovation
