Abstract
The article provides a detailed analysis of the results of the 2018-2020 regional elections by focusing on voter turnout, the majority competition (among presidential regional candidates) and the proportional competition (among party lists) in comparison with the results of the 2018 general election and the 2013-2015 regional elections. In particular, the article emphasizes the changes in the balance of power between mainstream and neopopulist parties and the extent to which these latter are also able to achieve significant results at regional level with their political offer. Finally, the article investigates whether these elections can be assessed as second-order elections and what are the main changes and continuities of regional party systems from 1995 onwards.
