Abstract
In the last regional elections in Veneto, the center-right coalition gained unprecedented consensus, and, within the coalition, the Lista Zaia was the first party at regional level. The research question is: has the transformation of the League into a national party succeeded in Veneto also or are the legacies of the white subculture still decisive for the explanation of the electoral results of September 2020? The hypothesis of this article is that in Veneto the League has not completely transformed into the national and nationalist party as the secretary Matteo Salvini designed, since the consensus of Luca Zaia is based on anti-statist localism as a long-term political culture. The result of our analysis is that the transformation of the League into a national party has been balanced by the regional leadership because it has been able to encapsulate the historical cleavage centre/periphery and represent the question of autonomy outside the official party.
